CB&Q 13848
Title:  CB&Q 13848
Description:  CB&Q 13848 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The power at the front of this train was GN F-units led by GN FT 403D. One possible explanation for this situation is that the CB&Q (at the time of this photo) assigned the waycar (caboose) to specific Conductors, so for the trip from Galesburg to Chicago, the Conductor's waycar would be attached.

CB&Q NE-7 13945
Title:  CB&Q NE-7 13945
Description:  CB&Q NE-7 13945 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This waycar (caboose) was built at the Aurora, Illinois shops in September 1914, became BN 11141, and was sold for scrap to Marfax Steel & Railway Equipment in January 1973. It is seen here crossing over from Track 3 to Track 2 in Naperville. The switches were manual at the time, which explains the gentleman behind the train who has finished re-aligning the switch behind and is moving to re-align the switch on Track 2. This was a very unusual move, and likely there was a problem on Track 3 between Naperville and Downers Grove, where there were dispatcher-controlled crossovers. Also seen is scale test car 204739 in the appropriate position at the rear of the train.

CB&Q Class NE-1 14351
Title:  CB&Q Class NE-1 14351
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class NE-1 14351 at Naperville, Illinois, September 3, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1906 at Aurora, this waycar was regularly assigned to the East End Way Freight, and is seen here on that train heading east after working the industries in Naperville. CB&Q NE1 14351
Title:  CB&Q NE1 14351
Description:  CB&Q NE1 14351 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The sign by the door reads: SHIPPING DOCUMENTS LOCATED HERE. Somewhat unusual, but the CB&Q assigned waycars (caboose) to specific Conductors, so this may have been a custom modification. I recall that this waycar was assigned to Mr. John Sylogye.

I became an honorary member of the crew around this date when I started hanging around and they became aware that my step-father operated the cafeteria at Kroehler Manufacturing Company, where the most switching was done in Naperville. I was allowed to fill their coffee thermoses! They got free hot coffee, I was out of their hair for a while, and I felt like I was contributing. I remember the smell of burning coal when I visited the interior of 14351, and I tasted my first cup of coffee in that waycar, hanging out with the crew after we completed the job.

CB&Q XAP-2 15004
Title:  CB&Q XAP-2 15004
Description:  CB&Q XAP-2 15004 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. According to the book, CB&Q Color Guide To Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor, Thrall delivered 15 Hy-Cube auto parts boxcars to the Burlington in September 1964 which were numbered 15000-15014 and designated XAP-2. They had an inside length of 86'6" and all came with Keystone cushion underframes, roofwalks, and full ladders. All of the cars in this group were dedicated to Ford Motor Company service, which required the double plug door arrangement that provided a 20' door opening. The circle to the left of the reporting marks reads: GSC CTR AT CHGO 8-7-68. It was reweighed CB 8 78. It is also stencilled REPAIR CAR POOL. Looks like it's in need of a coupler repair. This series of cars were assigned BN #'s 395000-395013, apparently one car did not make it.

CB&Q XM-32B 17227
Title:  CB&Q XM-32B 17227
Description:  CB&Q XM-32B 17227 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Burlington's Havelock, Nebraska shops built 1,900 class XM32B boxcars beginning in 1950, with 1,400 going to the CB&Q in the 17000-18399 number series, 250 went to the C&S in the 1000-1249 series, and 250 went to the FW&D in the 8501-8750 series. All 1,900 were fitted with a six-foot improved Youngstown corrugated door. When outshopped all except the C&S cars were painted in the then-standard mineral red with the slogans "Everywhere West" on one side (brake wheel to the left) and "Way Of The Zephyrs" on the other side (brake wheel to the right). The C&S cars were painted the same without slogans applied. The car pictured likely was shopped sometime after mid-1968 but before the March 2, 1970 merger. The idea was to paint in the word NORTHERN once the merger was approved. However, by the merger date, the BN letter font changed slightly and none of the repainted CB&Q cars had NORTHERN applied.

CB&Q XM-32B 18219
Title:  CB&Q XM-32B 18219
Description:  CB&Q class XM-32B 18219 at Kansas City, Missouri, April 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 1,900 class XM-32B 40' boxcars built by CB&Q's Havleock, Nebraska shops during 1950, this particular one is stencilled as built HV. 11.50. When built it was equipped with a six foot corrugated door, but likely exchanged it for a seven panel door during shopping. It is stencilled as having visited Havelock again: HV 10.66. But, it has lost the roofwalk, note the cut down ladder on the right side, so it might have visited a shop sometime after roofwalks were outlawed. It is also stencilled: RETIRED DO NOT LOAD CW 11-77.
