Not far from the Amtrak station in San Luis Obispo is a railroad museum, The museum owns several pieces of local railroad equpment, including this Plymouth switcher. The unit was built in April 1941 for the US Amry, who assigned the engine to switching duties at Camp Roberts, about 14 miles north of Paso Robles. After World War II, the unit was sold as surplus to a construction firm in Sacramento in late 1948, leaving in 1952 for a quarry in Shingle Springs. After changing owners several more times, the unit came to SLO in September 2018, where it currently resides. |

The station at San Luis Obispo is quiet on an overcast Monday in April. It will still be a hour or so before the northbound and southbound Coast Starlights arrive to change crews. The covered walkway over the tracks is a good vantage point to view the tracks. The Southern Pacific Railroad reached San Luis Obispo in 1894, but it would be another 6 years before the line was finished to Los Angeles. SLO became a crew-change point for SP trains northbound and southbound, complete with a small yard and engine facilities. All taht is gone, however, and all that remains is the 1943 station and the water tower, moved to the north end of the station. |
