Backing in |
Description: |
At this zime, Conrail would not let NYSW change crews out on the main for the D&H to take the train west. This was not without some justification, as the new crew could be anywhere from ten minutes to ten hours from getting on the train. As a result, NYSW had to back its train up into Bevier St, or onto their Utica Branch for the crew change. SLN 5 is doing just that at QD with three ex BN SD 45s. There more than enough room for the 55 Sea Land stacks and 18 freight. Lead unit 6366 doesn't seem to be sure what railroad it wants to run for. |

What a difference a few minutes make |
Description: |
I had just shot TV 301 here 27 minutes earlier in good sun. Now SLN 5 shows up, and its cloud city. Such is the fickle weather of the Southern Tier. Three SD 45s do the job today, a familiar sight to anyone who watched the EL run here. It's a good bet at least one of these units was here under BN ownership. |

Into the yard |
Description: |
NYSW in the 1980s acquired the Rahway Valley and former B&O line to Staten Island. Base for these operations was the small B&O facility in Cranford, adjacent to the ex CNJ, over whom B&O had trackage rights. NYSW 120 has just returned from working the RV, and has crossed over the CNJ-now NJ Transit-main at Excee tower, and will be taking the switch into the yard. This was a much busier place in CNJ days, as evidenced by the signal bridge in the distance. It was then four tracks, and a place where a train could cross over all of them. B&O and Reading passenger trains passed here, as did their freights. |

Excee Tower |
Description: |
Excee tower, named for its telegraph call sign, XC, controlled the junction of the CNJ and Rahway Valley, as well as access to the small B&O yard south of the main, which also was the access to the B&Os Staten Island Rapid Transit, though most freight service was to the Port Ivory area, a freight only part of the SIRT. NYSW 120 has just come off the RV and is crossing over to reach the yard, where it will tie up. |

Odd move |
Description: |
This NY 10 arrived at Little Ferry behind NYSW 3620/3630/3614. The lead two units were cut off and went across the Overpeck Creek bridge, leaving 3614 to bring the train in by itself. The only thing I can think of that would require this is a weight restriction on the bridge. The 3614 starts its train into the yard now that the two leaders are in. |

Down under Starrucca, where the D&H Penn Division once ran-you can see the right of way beyond the picnic table-is a small park. A little over a dozen years ago, you could see SD 45s here on a regular basis-the gray, maroon and yellow of the Erie Lackawanna, along with C628s on the D&H. The Penn Division is now only a memory, but its still good to see SD 45s on the viaduct. |

New order |
Description: |
In June of 1988, Guilford cast the D&H off into bankruptcy. The NYSW was named designated operator, and immediately took over running the railroad. They received help from CSX and NS, with CSX financing a total of 20 new B40-8s, as well as letting power run through to Jersey on stack trains. Heres SLN 4 rolling east at BD behind a pair of CSX units and an NYSW SD 45 as the late day sun reflects off the long line of containers. |

Yard work |
Description: |
The NYSW seemed to spend a lot of time working the Binghamton yard, despite running what seemed like very few trains-though they did work the Utica side almost daily then. Here one of the home road units gets some help from a D&H unit as it works at QD. |

A shot of this unit several months earlier showed it in the yard, missing its pilot. The shop has given it some attention, and it is now ready to go back on the road. |

Odd couple |
Description: |
It was unusual to see these two units together, especially since 120 spent most of its time in Jersey. I caught them together at the Binghamton shop. An RS 3 and SD 45 are peeking out from behind these two. The variety then was amazing. |
