Album Info:Baldwin City's a really small town, but they do have one thing most towns don't have--train service to Ottawa! Ottawa, Kansas, that is-and actually, the line by Ottawa is under repair, so right now they only get down to Norwood. Still, the people that work there are very nice and entertaining. Our conductor had a great sense of humor, and the engineer let me look around the cab of the locomotive! They'll run through October, then do the Polar Express train starting in mid-November, so hop aboard if you're ever in the area! UPDATE: Took a few more pictures a month later, when I went back for another ride. Enjoy!

Description:  Youre supposed to be able to take the Midland Railway all the way to Ottawa. However, it doesnt go into town because it has to stop at the BNSF mainline, which runs through. So I drove to Ottawa first to get shots of this, plus the old Santa Fe Depot.

Description:  One of those structures that predates the Santa Fe, this depot was built in 1888 by the Kansas City, Lawrence, and Southern Kansas Railroad! Probably their only one still in existence.

Description:  Santa Fe used the depot until 1962, when they built a smaller one (part of which is still standing) off the east-west line and moved in. The north-south line south of the east-west line was abandoned and turned into the Prairie Spirit Trail, Kansass first rail-trail.

Ironically, this became a problem, as a maintenance vehicle running on the tracks ahead of us broke down, forcing us to go back after only about seven minutes!

Description:  Old Katy caboose. When the train gets down to Ottawa, they bring the engine around to the other side so it can lead back, which is probably why this is here. Since we were going to Norwood, though, the engine just pushed back, with someone radioing from the caboose as he kept an eye out.

Description:  4079 heads out on a rescue mission, to bring back the disabled Mofw equipment! Before we left on the first ride, they let me walk around the cab. I didn't realize it at the time, but looking through some old photos, I discovered that I photographed it a year ago in Clinton, OK, when it was still a Farmrail engine ( http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4745889 ). Had no idea at that time I'd get to walk around inside it!
