BO 2-8-8-0 #7039 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-0 #7039 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Interesting history is attached to this massive and powerful loco. Built by Alco-Schenectady in January of 1912 as B&O 0-8-8-0 #2040 (class O-1), it was first renumbered and reclassified in 1916 as B&O #7039 (class LL-1). Sometime between 1919-23, it was rebuilt by the B&O Shops to the 2-8-8-0 wheel configuration seen in the photo below and reclassed as an EL-4 loco. The loco was finally retired and scrapped in November of 1950 after nearly 34 years of dedicated service. New rebuilt specs - 56" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, compound 26x41" high pressure cylinders with 32x56" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 471,300 lb, totally impressive tractive effort of 105,000 lb. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection..

BO 2-8-8-0 #7313 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-0 #7313 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Here is another intriguing history behind a loco. Built by Alco-Richmond in January of 1918 as Seaboard Air Line 2-8-8-2 #513, it was sold to the B&O in 1920 and renumbered BO 7313. In 1923, the loco was rebuilt to 2-8-8-0 as seen in the photo below at the M&K Junction near Rowlesburg, WV. It was reclassified as EL-6a. After serving the SAL and then the B&O for nearly 32 years, the massive loco was sold for scrap in July of 1950. Simplified-articulated specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, four 25x32" cylinders, engine wt of 492,000 lb and impressive tractive effort of 108,000 lb. No photographer was listed and no exact day in 1949 was given for the photo..

BO 2-8-8-0 #7315 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-0 #7315 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This loco has led quite an interesting life. Built by Alco-Richmond in January of 1912, it started out as Seaboard Air Line compound- articulated 2-8-8-2 #515. it was sold to the B&O in 1920 as their 7315 and reclassed as EE-1. In 1923, the B&O shops rebuilt it to a 2-8-8-0 and reclassified it as an EL-6 loco. Later in 1927, it was again rerbuilt into a simple-articulated loco and reclassified again as EL-6a.After serving the SAL and then the B&O for nearly 32 years, the massive loco was sold for scrap in July of 1950. I believe this photo was taken as it sat in the dead/scrap line at the Willard yard and this might be the last photo taken of it before the scrapper's torch ended its life. Simplified-articulated specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, four 25x32" cylinders, engine wt of 492,000 lb and impressive tractive effort of 108,000 lb. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection.
