Album Info:Most of the Chicago & Northwestern's lines in and around Wisconsin's capital city are a shell of their former selves thanks to abandonments by C&NW itself and later Union Pacific. WSOR leases from UP several branches that are stubs of these former main lines; to Reedsburg, Cottage Grove, and industries on the south side, and gamely keeps them alive. The former C&NW Monona Yard between E. Johnson Street and Commercial Avenue serves as the base of Madison area operations.

About to duck under County M, westbound out of town
Title:  About to duck under County M, westbound out of town
Description:  Judging by the color of the rails in front of the train, there haven't been many (if any) runs to Lycon yet this year. The ready-mix plant is in the distance near top right; a segment of this ex-C&NW trackage was re-opened in fall 2014 after 18 years out of service so that WSOR could deliver aggregate loads for Lycon out of their yard in Madison. South (RR east) of the plant, cars are stored up to WSOR's end-of-track at Brooklyn. This L469 job is pulling 126 tanks.

Approaching Lacy Road
Title:  Approaching Lacy Road
Description:  After some additional ballasting and rehab work following the initial re-opening in late 2014, by 2016 I observed several of the aggregate trains doing 25 MPH on the old C&NW jointed rail. Not this time, however. Was hoping to catch the units working a little harder with the >120 MTs. At least it allowed for some additional shots.

Crossing Lacy Road
Title:  Crossing Lacy Road
Description:  When the line was out of service from 1996-2014, the ungated C&NW-era crossing signals still stood here, gradually falling apart. The signal that was once where the one in this picture stands was knocked over by a vehicle sometime prior to 2006, and never replaced until the line was rehabbed at which time the other signal was removed and both replaced with temporary crossbucks. These modern gated signals were installed a year or two later. The "EXEMPT" signage remains due to the crossing's proximity to the intersection with Syene Road, a 4-way stop.

Easing through the Olin switch
Title:  Easing through the Olin switch
Description:  The track going off to the right was once the C&NW Ridge Runner line, which ran out to Lancaster with several additional spurs extending throughout far southwest Wisconsin. By the mid-'80s all was abandoned except for a stub serving Central Soya in Fitchburg. When they closed that location c. 2004-05, the line was cut back still further. Now only two customers, Vita Plus and Capital Newspapers, are served in the Fish Hatchery Road vicinity. Nothing used the line the train is on from the last UP train to Janesville in October 1996, until the Lycon plant opened in Oregon in September 2014.

WAMX 4178 with a Wednesday Waterloo Sub run
Title:  WAMX 4178 with a Wednesday Waterloo Sub run
Description:  I actually came out looking for the run to Cottage Grove which I'd observed on Wednesday afternoons earlier in the year. I've come to expect the Waterloo line run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The only constant is change with WSOR operating patterns.
