CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Description:  Some gentlemen appear to be concerned about the running gear on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001 at Denver, Colorado on September 10, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is the second Aeolus (Keeper of the Winds, from Greek mythology), completed in February 1938 by CB&Q's West Burlington Shops. Baldwin supplied the boiler, and Commonwealth supplied the engine and tender beds, cylinders, trailing and tender trucks, and other castings. Construction began in the summer of 1937. The first Aeolus was equipped with an Elesco feedwater heater, but this locomotive was equipped with a Worthington type SA instead, allowing for larger intake vents on either side of the headlight, which also served to mimic the vents on the EMC EA diesels that the two Aeolus locomotives were designed to substitute for in the event of a diesel failure. The 4001 also had a fully enclosed cab, a Commonwealth pilot with retractable coupler, and all three drivers were of the Boxpok type. Number 4001 also featured an anti-climber around the pilot (later added to 4000) and hinged covers that covered the pilot steps, seen here in the open position. The stainless steel shrouds, which presented maintenance difficulties, came off in late 1941 or early 1942 with the delivery of the E5 diesels. This locomotive was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1952, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4001 was completed by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa in February 1938 using components supplied by Baldwin and Commonwealth. As built it was shrouded in fluted stainless steel to match the then-new Zephyr trains. The shrouding only lasted a couple of years until the new stainless steel E5's arrived. The shrouding was removed and the 4001 became just another 4-6-4 assigned to various trains as needed. As built it had three Boxpok drivers, but it is shown here with a spoked third driver, likely acquired during shopping. Photos show the spoked driver as early as 1946. Number 4001 was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Obviously out of service, my best guess is 4001 is at Galesburg, Illinois around October 1960, when it was sold for scrap.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in October, 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4002 was completed by Baldwin in December 1930 as CB&Q class S-4 3009 (c/n 61556). During July 1938 it was shopped at West Burlington, Iowa and upgraded to class S-4-A with the application of a new valve gear frame, Boxpok main drivers, lightweight roller bearing rods and roller bearing trailing truck and tender truck journals, and renumbered to 4002 The tender capacity was increased from 24 to 27 tons by raising the sides of the coal bunker by six inches, enabling the locomotive to run straight through the 1,034 miles from Chicago to Denver without stopping for coal. During 1951 it was shopped again and converted to burn oil by dropping a 7,300 gallon fuel oil bunker into the coal compartment and reclassed as S-4-B. It ran until about 1958, when it was stored at Lincoln. It was finally sold for scrap in 1960, the cab and tender were removed (along with the tender of number 4003), it was drawbar-connected back to back with 4003 (which also had its cab removed), and the two locomotives were moved (without the tenders, which were retained for MOW use) in November 1960 to Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois and scrapped.
