Title:  Past the signals
Description:  The semaphore at Waverly was on a mast, and at one time hosted a warning light for a hot box detector a few miles to the west on track 2-note the pole sticking straight down below the signal. The signal on the track 1 was unfortunately a tri light unit, so no twin semaphores here. It was still a good shot as we see 270 rolling east behind an SD40 mix with 23 cars.

Description:  Built new for Missouri Pacific for unit coal service, these SD40-2s came equipped with dynamic braking and a nose mounted Gyralight. The five units in this order were sold to GATX for lease service and this one is parked in SP's Settlegast Yard. Although the Gyralight is no longer in use and has been painted over, the broken glass gives this unit a run down appearance.

Description:  Usually 270 ran mid to late morning. Todays effort is behind, getting through Endicott in the late afternoon. It was worth the wait, thats an interesting power set. Today's train has 60 freight and 11 TOFC tacked on behind. Check out the Shawmut hoppers behind the power. They were a fairly common sight on the Tier in those days.

Description:  This is train QNLCH2 20 (Manifest from North Little Rock, AR to Clearing, IL [Chicago]). It arrived at 00:25 (12:25 A.M.). Since it wasn't sitting in the north end of the yard, we were a little spooked, thinking the trace was messed up, but I spotted the dimmed headlight of this unit in the south end of the yard, near the industrial park. We really came after it for 1 of the Last 3 CNW's was in the consist!

Former Mo-Pac SD40-2c
Title:  Former Mo-Pac SD40-2c
Description:  What a treat! This is a former Mo-Pac SD40-2c, the "c" for coal. A few were built to BN specificatations for MP/UP/BN/D&RGW coal power pool. These were ballasted to up to 417,000 pounds for more tractive effort, had dynamic brakes, and were equipped with a MARS Light like Rio Grande units, and a rotating beacon like BN units. Otherwise they were MP features. It was built as 3219 before more coal service units were built. They were then renumbered into the 6000 series and more non-dynamic brake equipped units were built in the 3200 series.
