It's stopped at the dwarf signal, but will shortly head toward the Wye Switches in Duncansville ~ where it will either turn right and head toward the yards in Altoona, or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the distance is the Blair County Court House steeple, located in the very heart of Hollidaysburg.

Description:  Westing. Here is a photo that was published originally in Fred Westing's 1974 book entitled "Pennsy Steam And Semaphores," page 149. Partial Caption: "In 1921, the Southern Pacific Company ordered 50 locomotives of the 2-10-2 type. These engines were completed in 1922, and Samuel Vauclain thought this a fine opportunity to provide a demonstration of American industry. A group of twenty of these giant locomotives were, therefore, herded together to form a train that was known as the Prosperity Special." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #121, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during December 1917 and retired in February of 1958 after 41 years of faithful service. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #449, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during February of 1917 and retired in February of 1948 after 31 years of faithful service. Visible on the right is a portion of engine #115. Accroding to Mr. Jonathan Spurlock, #115 is more than likely a Norfolk & Western Railroad Class K-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the N&W Shops during 1916. The date is an approximation.

Description:  FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 24 July 1948. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #809 and #5522. Both were built in Juniata. #809 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" constructed during May of 1917 and retired in October of 1948, while #5522 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in May of 1946 and retired March of 1952. They're about to enter one of the Gallitzin Tunnels with a passenger train bound for Johnstown and points West. Once past the tunnel, #809 will be uncoupled and head back down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona for yet another helper run. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
