Crawford Station |
Description: |
July 1896 Engine 139 at Crawford Station. The Reading Dispatch boxcar on the siding in the background is a nice touch as well. If I read the back ground properly the train is headed west. There’s a velocipede on the platform and it looks like some of the passengers are looking under the deck, perhaps someone’s cat has taken a hike... ? #139 built by the Rhode Island Works in 1891 was scrapped in June of 1914. Cyl 19x26 with 56 /1/2 inch drivers. Builders # 2616 according to RR History #152. /DL |

SSW 2-6-0 #191 - St Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt) |
Description: |
Nice photo of an early 2-6-0 Mogul type steam locomotive built by Rhode Island in 1888 for the St Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt). Specs - class C1, 57" drivers, 150 psi boiler pressure, 18x24" cylinders, light engine weight of 114,500 lb, small tractive effort of 17,394 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but the "Chili" sign and stucco buildings made me think Texas..Finally, Ron Maxfield comes to our rescue and identifies the location (see comment below). The location is Corsicana, Texas, with the Wolf Brand Chili sign at the plant's location. Thanks, Ron!!! |

EUREKA SPRINGS AR Dec 1981 -- An Alco mogul sees action at the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway. According to Wikipedia, "No. 201, a 2-6-0 (Mogul), built 1906, American Locomotive Company, Paterson, NJ; coal-burner converted to oil; 185 psi (1,280 kPa); 21,000 lb (9,500 kg) tractive effort.[9] It is one of three known surviving locomotives that worked on the Panama Canal; originally built to 5-foot gauge.[10] Retired early in the 21st century because a boiler re-build was mandated by the state boiler inspector." |

ESNA 2-6-0 #201 - Eureka Springs & Northern Arkansas |
Description: |
Somehow a 1906 Alco 2-6-0 Mogul built for the Isthmian Canal construction ended up at the Eureka Sprints & Northern Arkansas tourist railroad. Unfortunately the loco is no longer running having been sidelined in early 2000's due to boiler rebuild requiements. Does anyone know the disposition of the loco now? It is not listed on their webiste being on active duty. The photographer who took this was listed only as "Jones". |
