GN 2-8-8-2 #2038 - Great Northern |
Description: |
This is a massive beast was built by the Great Northern's own Hillyard Shops in 1927. According to www.gngoat.org website, "The mountain-shrinking 2-8-8-2 was the all-time giant of Great Northern's steam fleet -- and the largest locomotive in the world when Baldwin built the first of its class. Most of the big R's, however, came from the railway's own shops at Hillyard, Washington, and were the first steam locomotives built in the Pacific Northwest." Specs - R-1s class, 63" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 28x32" cylinders, engine weight of 594,940 lb, impressive tractive effort of 152,320 lb. The entire class of 2-8-8-2's were retired between 1951-1955. Only two remain - one at the Illinois RR Museum at Union, IL and one at the Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, MO. No information was given for this photo so the date and location are "guess-timations". Unknown photographer. |

GN 2-8-8-2 #2049 - Great Northern |
Description: |
Massive and powerful just don't seem to be adjectives that due justice to the locomotive even though they are fitting in every sense. This massive 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake type steam locomotive was built by the Great Northern's own Hilyard Shops in 1929. The Great Northern called these monsters "R's" from their class name instead of the eastern US name of "Chesapeake". Coming out of the Hillyard Shops in Spokane, WA, these were the first steam locomotives built in the Pacific Northwest. Specs - R-2 class, 63" drivers, impressive 240psi boiler pressure, four 28x32" cylinders, engine weight of 630,750 lb and impressive tractive effort of 162,475 lb. The entire class of 2-8-8-2's were retired by 1946. Only two remain - one at the Illinois RR Museum at Union, IL and one at the Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, MO. No information was given for this photo so the date and location are "guess-timations". |

NW 2-8-8-2 #2126, Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
Another N&W shops product was this 1930 Y6 class "Chesapeake type" locomotive seen here is all its power. It was able to produce an astounding 300 psi boiler pressure! No wonder it could handle the heavy coal trains of the East as well as anything else they would need it to do. No date or location was given for this photo nor the photographer's name. |

N&W 2-8-8-2 #2156 - Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
According to the back of the photo, this was taken at Schaeffer's Crossing in Roanoke, VA - one heavy traffic area! Built by the N&W shops in 1942 as a class Y, this is an example of a true Mallet with both articulation and compound expansion (high & low pressure cylinder configuration). The locomotive had 57” drivers, developed a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and a total tractive effort of 126,831 lb. Sadly, these brutes were all retired by April, 1960. |

Norfolk & Western Y6a 2156 2-8-8-2 |
Description: |
Norfolk & Western Y6a 2-8-8-2 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO. This is a compound articulated meaning the front cylinders are larger and use the steam exhausted from the higher pressure rear cylinders. But they could also run all cylinders high pressure for starting but would switch to compound at around 5 mph. |
