Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1952 (c/n 14706) on EMD Order 5148, it became BN 1598 and was retired in August 1983. I believe this would be considered a Phase II GP7, it has the oval inspection cutouts in the skirting over the fuel tank. It is not equipped with a steam generator, the evidence being the lack of a second filler connection in the same skirting over the fuel tank, and no visible intake or exhaust stacks on top of the short hood. I had an opportunity to visit the short hood of a GP7 without a steam generator, and it was ballasted with a concrete cube about the size of two refrigerators. |
