GM&O E8m 100A
GM&O E8m 100A at Glenn Yard west of Chicago, Illinois on June 6, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Not a pretty picture, but it's the only shot I got of this locomotive, and it has an interesting history. Built in June 1937 as B&O 52, it was one of only six EMC model EA's built, B&O 51-56. The B&O also had the only EB's built, six matching boosters, 51x-56x. These units had twin Winton 201A 12 cylinder prime movers rated at 900 hp each, 1800 hp total, and the A units had a sloped cab similar to the E6. In 1940, B&O 52 was transferred to the Alton (then controlled by the B&O), becoming Alton 52, and when the GM&O absorbed the Alton in 1947, it became GM&O 100A. In March 1953, it was sent to EMD for rebuilding to E8m, returning still numbered 100A. I believe it was rated at 2000 hp, owing to the reuse of some of the original components, notably the main generators and traction motors. It worked for Amtrak for a while, was taken out of service in August 1974, and finally sold for scrap in March 1975 to Precision National.
