Fuel stand at the Illinois Central Gulf's Gulfport Yard, facing east. The buildings in the background are on the other side of 25th Avenue (U.S. Highway 49). At one time, this end of the wye continued east about five miles to Handsboro, on Bernard Bayou. Handsboro was the site of the Henry Lienhard sawmill and was also a shipping location for finished export lumber and large timbers being sent out in ships by way of Ship Island, before the port of Gulfport was finished; but that line was abandoned around 1906. |
