Coal on the Kansas Pacific  Contributor's Pick!
The UP line from Kansas City to Denver was never a heavy hitter in the transcontinental lineup, largely due to no outlet at Denver-all the overland traffic went through Cheyenne. It did become a good way to get coal east, since trains coming off the Colorado coal lines could go straight into KC and connections, and stay out of the way of the high priority trains. Heres a coal train at Cheyenne Wells behind an SP unit. still a common sight at the time.
