Battling snow in the Western Rockies was a standard chore for the 1903 Baldwin built 2-8-2 narrow gauge Mikado wearing the Denver & Rio Grande Western logo. In this photo by an unknown photographer, it's caught with a blade full of snow as it clears the track for passage for a later freight train later in the day. No accurate date was given for the photo but since the loco was sold to Gene Autry in 1955, it must be a prior date. The loco was eventually donated to the City of Antonito in 1972. Some 22 years later in 1994, it was rebuilt and entered into service on the Cumbres & Toltec where it is today. |
