This interesting photo was taken by an unknown photographer while Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire #759 was heading up one of the fan excursions it led while operational at Steamtown National Historic Site. Definitely a more "modern" way of loading coal than a traditional coaling tower used to be and far more fans watching than used to at a coaling tower too.. Note the Western Maryland Alco S2 #126 which headed up the coaling train. It would be retired two years later. Note on the back of the photo states "NKP 759 on train AJ-1 and AJ-2 being loaded at Cumberland." No photographer was listed for this action photo. |
