IC Locomotives at Mays Yard
Illinois Central “improved” 2-8-2 1672 and four other freshly-serviced locomotives were simmering away on the ready track at the railroad’s MAYS YARD, just west of New Orleans. The yard never had a turntable, so locomotives were turned a wye. The track in the foreground is the north leg of the wye, while the south leg is on the other side of the engine house which can be seen in the background on the left. The 1672 was built by Lima in 1918 as IC 1882, was renumbered 1370 in April 1943, renumbered 1672 in March 1954 and scrapped in July 1956, so we can narrow the time period of this photo by these last two dates.
