A pair of 51-year old ex-CNJ GP40Ps are ready to lead NJ Transit's "Railmen for Children" west on the Boonton Line for a trip to Port Morris Yard and back. The lead engine is one of NJ Transit's three newest heritage locomotives paying tribute to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. There's something about the look of a 2nd generation standard cab EMD that just say "Locomotive" to me. I grew up when NJ Transit was in the process of ordering a ton of GP40 rebuilds and almost all the Conrail trains that ran through my hometown of Rutherford were all EMD GP and SD power until the C40-8Ws started to show up. Personally I like the modern appearance of a lot of the newer power that on the rails today but no matter how technology advances as time goes by whenever someone says the world "locomotive" the image that pops up in my head is a GP40.
