Passengers and onlookers were gathered around Southern Railway 2-8-0 722 at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Saturday 10 April 1971. The locomotive had arrived in New Orleans on 28 March for the city’s very first Southern steam excursions, which ran to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and back on 3 and 4 April. Here, the steam engine and some cars were about to depart on its ferry trip back to the Southern’s steam shop in Birmingham, although the train only ran as far as Meridian, Mississippi on this day. The Southern allowed passengers to ride on its ferry trips, when equipment was being moved from one location to another. |
