Album Info:Most of the Chicago & Northwestern's lines in and around Wisconsin's capital city are a shell of their former selves thanks to abandonments by C&NW itself and later Union Pacific. WSOR leases from UP several branches that are stubs of these former main lines; to Reedsburg, Cottage Grove, and industries on the south side, and gamely keeps them alive. The former C&NW Monona Yard between E. Johnson Street and Commercial Avenue serves as the base of Madison area operations.

Title:  HLCX 6305 poses with the WSOR yard sign
Description:  A grab shot from my driver's side window while in traffic on E. Johnson Street. The low resolution of my crappy phone camera renders the number unreadable but the ex-MPI paint identifies this as HLCX 6305. It and 6328 have recently joined 6313 and 6334 in service on the WSOR, providing some variety among the red and gray brigade.

L468 crew takes 3947 to grab their train while 4219 sleeps away a fine fall afternoon
Title:  L468 crew takes 3947 to grab their train while 4219 sleeps away a fine fall afternoon
Description:  In the foreground, a track gang is giving the "main" line (technically part of the Reedsburg Sub) some TLC. Both of these locomotives are Watco-era additions to the red and gray fleet (all running under WAMX reporting marks, not WSOR, since toward the end of 2016). 3947 appeared in spring 2014 in ugly patched UP yellow, and was repainted in spring 2017. 4219 arrived sometime in 2016 in the generic Watco black with yellow accents, and was repainted sometime in late 2017 or early 2018. It is an ex-CP SD40 and the only unit on the railroad with the headlight mounted on the short hood.

L468 leaves the yard, easing into the curve and crossing Johnson Street
Title:  L468 leaves the yard, easing into the curve and crossing Johnson Street
Description:  Train is on the easternmost of two tracks coming out of the former C&NW Monona Yard, used by WSOR in Madison since around 1996. It curves sharply from a southerly heading to northeasterly, and was once part of the C&NW line between Madison and Milwaukee, which now only goes as far as Cottage Grove. At a switch east of Waubesa Street, formerly a diamond crossing known as Junction A, the ex-Milwaukee Road line to Sun Prairie, Marshall, Waterloo and Watertown splits off.

Long End Round the Bend
Title:  Long End Round the Bend
Description:  Based on my experience the previous week, I headed to the yard around 2 PM and sure enough, L468 was getting ready to go again. This time they had a more typical configuration (it seems, when I catch them), a solo SD40-2 long-hood forward. At the front of the train are empty gons for loading with scrap metal at Alter on Sycamore Avenue. Behind them are a cut of aggregate loads for the adjacent Lycon ready-mix plant.

WAMX 4178 leads L468 out of the yard and across Johnson Street
Title:  WAMX 4178 leads L468 out of the yard and across Johnson Street
Description:  This is the former WSOR 4009, an ex-Milwaukee Road unit. It once had a dedication to Lucy Stone Gardner, late wife of former WSOR owner/CEO Bill Gardner, on each side of the long hood immediately behind the cab. It was blotted out soon after he sold the railroad to Watco in 2012. Further pictures of this train are in the album "WSOR Waterloo Subdivision."

Take it to the end of the line
Title:  Take it to the end of the line
Description:  L867 is shoving their three lumber loads over the Park Street crossing, the red board just before the next crossing west can be seen. The track continues for about a half-mile beyond that, but that portion hasn't been used in over ten years and is rumored to be being torn out later this year. West of there, C&NW abandoned the line as far as Camp Douglas in 1987. They're shoving to clear the switch to the run-around track in the foreground, they'll use that track to access the set-out track where the loads will be spotted for Hartje.

WAMX 4172 stands ready to take the five-car local back to Madison after switching the industries
Title:  WAMX 4172 stands ready to take the five-car local back to Madison after switching the industries
Description:  Chanced upon this train on its way out a couple hours earlier while running errands, after I was done figured they might still be here. Sure enough. Not sure why they sit here for up to an hour or more after the train is assembled before heading back.

Oil loads, Janesville to Madison on the ex-C&NW?
Title:  Oil loads, Janesville to Madison on the ex-C&NW?
Description:  Not exactly (a four-day late April fool!)...L469 is clearing out 126 tankers that were stored on the line near Brooklyn. Unlike further north (RR west) where train movements are somewhat more regular to serve the Lycon ready-mix plant, the active crossing protection at Perry Parkway was not restored when the line was re-opened. The one signal still standing was removed, and a pair of crossbucks with yield signs added.

Rare Mileage
Title:  Rare Mileage
Description:  L469 crosses a small bridge over a depression/drainage canal. Irregular storage moves like this are the only train traffic here; the local sometimes brings their cars south (RR east) of Netherwood Road while switching the Lycon plant but seldom if ever makes it this far.
